How to Treat Vertigo at Home
Understanding Vertigo and Its Causes
Vertigo is a condition that can cause dizziness, lightheadedness, and a feeling of movement when there is none. It can be caused by certain inner ear disorders, such as benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV). It can also be caused by other conditions, such as Meniere's disease and vestibular neuritis. In some cases, the cause of vertigo is unknown.
Home Remedies for Vertigo
There are a few home remedies that can help you treat vertigo symptoms at home. These include:
Ginger Tea
Ginger has anti-inflammatory properties and can help reduce vertigo symptoms. To make ginger tea, boil a cup of water and add a few slices of fresh ginger or a teaspoon of ground ginger. Allow it to steep for 5 minutes and then strain. Drink the tea twice daily for best results.
Vestibular Rehabilitation Exercises
Vestibular rehabilitation exercises are designed to help your brain learn how to process signals from your inner ear. These exercises can help reduce symptoms of vertigo and improve balance. Examples of vestibular rehabilitation exercises include the Epley maneuver and the Brandt-Daroff exercises.
Acupressure
Acupressure is a type of massage that can help relieve vertigo symptoms. Applying pressure to certain points on the body can help reduce dizziness and lightheadedness. To perform acupressure, apply firm pressure with your fingers to the points located on the back of the neck and around the ears.
Stay Hydrated
Dehydration can make vertigo symptoms worse, so it’s important to stay hydrated. Aim to drink at least 8 glasses of water each day. You can also increase your fluid intake by eating foods that are high in water content, such as watermelon, strawberries, and cucumbers.
Limit Alcohol and Caffeine
Alcohol and caffeine can both worsen vertigo symptoms, so it’s best to limit your intake of these substances. Try to stick to one or two drinks per day and try to limit your caffeine to no more than two cups of coffee or tea per day.
Avoid Bright Lights and Loud Noises
Bright lights and loud noises can trigger vertigo symptoms, so it’s best to try to avoid these when possible. If you’re in a loud environment, wear earplugs or headphones to help muffle the sound. When it comes to lights, try to wear sunglasses or a hat to reduce the brightness.
When to See a Doctor
If home remedies don’t seem to be helping, or if your symptoms are getting worse, it’s important to see a doctor. Your doctor can help diagnose the cause of your vertigo and recommend treatment options. In some cases, medications may be prescribed to help reduce vertigo symptoms.
